Exam Countdown Timer (Free) with Strict Mode

Keep exams running smoothly with a clear, accurate timer that works in any browser. Set a reading period, then switch automatically to the writing countdown with scheduled warnings at 30, 20, 10, 5 and 1 minute remaining. Strict Mode disables pausing for authentic conditions, while +/− time adjustments support access arrangements and extra time. Use Fullscreen or Projector View so every candidate can see the clock. Export a CSV log for record-keeping after the paper ends. Ideal for GCSEs, A-Levels, mocks, classroom tests, university exams and invigilated assessments.

Best practice in exam rooms

  • Visibility: Project the timer or place a laptop facing candidates; ensure large, high-contrast display.
  • Consistency: Use the scheduled warning banners so invigilators don’t lose track.
  • Accessibility: Apply +/− time for approved extra time; mute beeps if audio is not permitted.
  • Reliability: Keep this tab focused; some browsers throttle background tabs.
  • Record-keeping: Export the CSV log to document start/finish and warnings.

FAQs

Q: Does this work for GCSE and A-Level exams?
A: Yes. Set the exact duration (e.g., 1:45 or 2:00) and optional reading time, then project the timer for the room.

Q: What is Strict Mode?
A: It disables pausing so the timer can’t be stopped mid-exam. You can still add or remove minutes for access arrangements.

Q: Can I schedule a start time?
A: Yes. Enter a 24-hour time (HH:MM) and the timer will begin automatically.

Q: Will candidates hear beeps?
A: You choose. Beeps can be muted; warnings still display on screen.

Q: Is there a projector or wall-clock view?
A: Yes. Use Fullscreen or open the separate Projector View so everyone can see the countdown clearly.

Q: Can I log what happened during the exam?
A: Yes. Export the event log (CSV) to record start, warnings and finish times.

Q: Does it keep running in the background?
A: Keep the tab active for the most reliable timing and audio; some browsers throttle background tabs.
