Formula | Ideal Weight | Notes |
---|---|---|
Devine | — | Clinical dosing baseline; uses 5′ + inches. |

Formulas provide reference ranges, not medical advice. Body composition and health goals matter.
One-line intro: Calculate your ideal body weight (IBW) using four evidence-based formulas and see the healthy BMI weight range for your height. Mobile-friendly, no sign-up.
Ideal body weight (IBW)” is an estimated weight based on height and sex. It originated for clinical dosing and population references — it’s not a perfect “goal weight” for everyone. Your best weight depends on body composition, health status, and preferences.
This page includes Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas plus a healthy BMI weight range (18.5–24.9) for your height.
Originally proposed for drug dosing.
Male: 50.0 kg + 2.3 kg × (inches over 5 ft)
Female: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg × (inches over 5 ft)
A refinement that often yields a slightly lower number for women.
Male: 52.0 kg + 1.9 kg × (in over 5 ft)
Female: 49.0 kg + 1.7 kg × (in over 5 ft)
Mid-range compared with others.
Male: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg × (in over 5 ft)
Female: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg × (in over 5 ft)
An older table-derived estimate; sometimes higher for men.
Male: 48.0 kg + 2.7 kg × (in over 5 ft)
Female: 45.4 kg + 2.2 kg × (in over 5 ft)
Frame size note: Some clinicians adjust IBW by ±10% for small/large frame. This calculator includes an optional frame adjustment dropdown.
Alongside IBW formulas, we show the weight range corresponding to BMI 18.5–24.9 for your height. This gives a practical target band, not a single number. Remember BMI does not reflect body composition — athletes may sit above this range with healthy body fat.
Q: Is there one “best” ideal weight formula?
No. Each IBW formula was derived from a different dataset. Use them as reference points along with BMI range and your body composition.
Q: Should I always aim for the average of the formulas?
The average IBW is a convenient reference, but your best weight may be above or below depending on muscle mass, health history, and preferences.
Q: Can I use frame size?
Yes. A simple ±10% adjustment is common; true frame assessment uses skeletal measurements, which most people don’t track.
Q: Why is my BMI range wider than my IBW?
BMI maps height to a range of healthy weights, while each IBW formula yields a single estimate.
Q: Is IBW suitable for athletes or pregnancy?
Not really. For athletes, body fat % and performance are more relevant. For pregnancy, follow clinical guidance rather than IBW.
