What Is a Leap Year?

A leap year is a year that has 366 days instead of 365. An extra day, 29 February, is added to keep our calendar aligned with Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

The leap year rule:

  • If a year is divisible by 4, it’s usually a leap year.
  • But if it’s divisible by 100, it is not a leap year…
  • Unless it’s also divisible by 400 → then it is a leap year.

Example:

  • ✅ 2024 → Leap Year
  • ❌ 2100 → Not a Leap Year
  • ✅ 2000 → Leap Year

Why Do We Have Leap Years?

Leap years exist to fix the mismatch between the calendar year (365 days) and the solar year (365.242 days).
Without leap years, our calendar would drift out of sync with the seasons.
